Trail Overview

Cottonwood Road (FS 504) is a beautifully maintained, highly scenic 5.9-mile transit that immediately immerses off-road travelers in a spectacular, dense aspen forest. Right from the start, thousands of tall, mature aspen trees line both sides of the relatively wide, two-lane dirt track, creating a brilliant, deeply shaded driving corridor. The early portions of the route are exceptionally smooth, clearly showing signs of recent grading and entirely lacking deep ruts or large, intimidating rock obstacles. Nestled deeply beneath this protective canopy, explorers will discover numerous private, highly secluded dispersed campsites offering fantastic shade. As you push further along the meandering path, the terrain becomes slightly more rugged; moderate dirt ruts ranging from 6 to 10 inches begin to appear, and a few localized sections remain notably muddy and soft year-round. A major highlight of the journey is a remarkably massive, pristine riverside campsite capable of comfortably accommodating anywhere from 5 to 20 vehicles, complete with multiple stone fire rings for large group gatherings. Additionally, travelers will find a clean, flowing natural spring perfectly situated along the trail for fresh water collection. Serving as a crucial backcountry artery, Cottonwood Road acts as a gateway to a much wider network, seamlessly linking to nearby spur trails that provide access to hundreds of additional camps, beautiful creek access points, and majestic, panoramic viewpoints.

Difficulty

Cottonwood Road (FS 504) comfortably earns a Level 2 Easy technical rating, primarily due to its well-maintained, highly forgiving early sections that are wide enough for two vehicles to pass safely. The vast majority of the 5.9-mile track is exceptionally smooth, allowing for a relaxing, scenic drive through the aspens without needing heavy articulation or extreme ground clearance. The modest difficulty comes into play further down the trail, where drivers must steadily navigate sections of mild 6-10 inch dirt ruts and patches of persistent, year-round mud. While easily managed by a stock 4x4 or capable AWD crossover, drivers should carry basic recovery gear just in case the muddy sections become saturated after heavy rains.
