Trail Overview

Poughkeepsie Gulch is just about the only challenging Jeep trail in the San Juans. The reason for the 7-rating is the one major obstacle, called "The Wall." When most people talk about this trail, they focus on this obstacle. That is important, but the scenery in the gulch is also worthy of mention - especially Lake Como. Until 2015, there was no bypass for the wall;you had to climb it or go back. This caused quite a few accidents, so a bypass was built. You can now enjoy Poughkeepsie Gulch without this major challenge. The trail in is rated at a strong 5. There is at least one tricky ledge and a stretch of road with many boulders. The bypass, and the road beyond, is easier. This is a secluded trail with some amazing obstacles to play on. Try your luck on the main obstacle which is a very steep rock, with an occasional audience. You can winch if you need to, or bypass it if you can't make it up and over. The trail isn't plowed, so it opens later than most.

Compared to Hurricane and California this trail easily earns a 4. I only drove down to Lake Como for a closer view, which was worth the short distance of a more difficult trail.

Always a great trail. This trip had the most people I’ve ever seen on the trail but it was still so pretty! Worth it always.

I drove the trail in reverse. Lots of mud pools and water crossings. The Wall and the bypass are about the same difficulty. Lots of ATVs present.

What a fun ride! Northbound, you're going down the wall. Southbound, you're going up it. We went down. Not sure I'd want to do that again- next time we're going UP!

Pretty rainy. Got to the wall fairly easily it was very wet and muddy almost greasy consistency decided to use bypass. Will do this again. Absolutely worth the views.
