Trail Overview

Peru Creek is a wide, easy trail that follows alongside its namesake creek, offering a scenic and mellow drive without any true obstacles. The road is approachable for most high-clearance vehicles, making it a good choice for those looking for a relaxed backcountry route. Numerous dispersed campsites line the way, many tucked along the water, providing excellent options for overnight stays. Cell service is nonexistent, so preparation is essential. The trail eventually ends at a locked gate, where motorized travel stops but hiking opportunities continue deeper into the valley.

History

This area north of Montezuma is steeped in mining history. During the late 1800s, Peru Creek was heavily developed for silver and gold, and remnants of historic mining operations are still visible today. Old mine sites and cabin ruins dot the valley, serving as reminders of the boomtown era that shaped Summit County. The alpine creek and surrounding peaks create a beautiful backdrop, with summer wildflowers filling the meadows and wildlife often spotted along the corridor.

First time taking our 6th Gen 4runner out. As offroad noobs this was a good first taste. Trail was mostly dry, mud puddles in a few spots and some packed snow in the ahaded areas. Saw a handful of other vehicles but otherwise quiet.

Really enjoyable, easy drive. Populated in certain sections but not unbearably busy. Close to the trailhead, the road is rutted and turbulent but not difficult.

This road has a ton of camping. Downside is that is so busy and dusty.
