Trail Overview

Old Flowers Road is a challenging offroad trail featuring mud ruts, steep hills with loose rock, potholes, and erosion throughout. The trail is rough, with dips, bumps, and occasional water crossings that demand careful vehicle handling. Portions of the route traverse burn scars, adding to the rugged and unpredictable terrain. Some sections of the trail are rated Level 4, with potential Level 5 on one hill in particular, with erosion and ruts that are offset and require 4Low - challenges for experienced drivers seeking a technical adventure. The eastern approach passes by working ranches, adding a touch of rural scenery to the high-country experience.

Difficulty

This is an unmaintained trail, with loose rocks, and hill climbs dotted with loose rock, heavy erosion, and trail damage that requires 4Low. These features could become exacerbated after use and moisture events. Caution is urged.

History

Historically, Old Flowers Road follows old ranching and logging access routes that provided connections between remote homesteads and grazing lands in the region. The trail sits within areas impacted by wildfires over the past decades, which have shaped the current burn scar sections visible along the route. Today, it serves primarily as an offroad recreation corridor, offering opportunities for dispersed camping, wildlife viewing, and exploration of Colorado’s mountainous terrain, with no cellular service along most of the route.

Trail has a few sports that definitely require a high clearance 4x4. While I was there the trail was bone dry except a couple tiny streamlets and one fairly large mud pit that required careful wheel placement to avoid the deep side. This trail used to be simpler, but has degraded a great deal recently, likely due to erosion from the burn scar. There are lots of speed humps that a long wheel base or low vehicle may have issues with. There is a deep hole about 1/4 from the east end that is currently a mud pit, and on the west end there are several steep hills with ruts and rocks that require 4LO, high clearance, and picking a line carefully. There are also several sharps fields, so I suggest airing down and taking your time.

Current trail condition is good. Lots of new tree growth in the burn areas. I utilized 4-low for a lot of it, kept me from over speeding, and threw the rear locker on for the steeper bits. This was my first time on it and I wish I was paying more attention. There was a “obstacle ahead” warning sign that I mistakenly thought was the somewhat tight fit past a massive downed tree. When really it was the ~2’ shelf or steep drop off that was another ~100 yards down the trail that I didn’t see coming. Ended up crunching down on my pinch weld/rocker panel a bit and then exhaust tip. Ram 1500 Rebel with front level and 35” tires.

Some rutted areas, as long as you have high clearance you’re fine.

Two challenging write out sections. I was able to clear them in my stock Tacoma with 31” tires, rear lockers, and four low. However, anything less than that would be very tricky.

Clear of debris. 2 or 3 significant water hazards, 2 somewhat difficult uphill (east to west) climbs due to deep rutting and 1 other deeply rutted area. I would say 80% of the 12 mile trail could be considered "easy" but the remaining 20% of more difficult sections are dispersed evenly enough along the trail to make high clearance (of at least 9") and lockers necessary.

First few miles are just a dirt road. Never needed 4wd. Closed a few miles in.

Hit the trail with my son. I was in my mostly stock 2019 crew cab Toyota Tundra SR5 TRD Offroad with 33” KO3’s and he was in his 2016 Toyota Tacoma Pro with stock size KO3’s. Overall the trail is in pretty good condition but there are some difficult spots here and there. Both of us made use of our rock sliders in a couple places. There is one steep climb that is heavily rutted where we needed to fill one of the holes with a number of logs that were already scattered in the hole.

OHV's are NOT permitted on the trail, the trail has some washed out areas. I road with a group on the trail and 2 vehicles were completely stock. I would recommend a high clearance 4x4 with at least 35's to make the trail a little easier. All in all the trail is great and filled with beautiful views.
