Trail Overview
This intermediate-rated trail combines outstanding scenery with abundant wildlife and a variety of engaging obstacles. The route begins with a rough, chunky surface of loose rock, making it an ideal place to air down your tires before continuing. As you climb, the terrain transitions from loose rock to solid slickrock slabs and stepped ledges reaching up to 18 inches in height. After the first few miles, the trail becomes noticeably smoother as it winds through cooler, higher-elevation forests with several exceptional dispersed campsites along the way. A moderate water crossing, typically around 12 inches deep, adds to the adventure before the route descends to the non-motorized trailheads at its terminus.
Difficulty
This route is best suited for drivers with some off-road experience and a vehicle with good ground clearance or appropriately sized tires. The trail begins with loose, rocky terrain before transitioning to a series of rock ledges up to 18 inches high that require careful tire placement. Numerous ruts alternate from one side of the trail to the other, creating a technical driving experience that demands attention and good line selection. This difficulty rating assumes dry conditions; if the trail is wet or has recently experienced a storm, traction can be significantly reduced, and you should reassess whether conditions are appropriate before proceeding.
History
Located beyond Sweetwater Canyon and Red Dirt Canyon on the south side of the Flat Tops, the North Derby, Middle Derby, and South Derby Road system began as a network of ranch and wagon roads that provided access to summer grazing allotments, timber stands, and remote mountain terrain. Long before these roads existed, the area was part of the seasonal range of the Ute people, who traveled the valleys and high country to hunt and gather resources. During the early 1900s, the routes were incorporated into the White River National Forest road system and were gradually improved to support livestock operations, timber management, wildfire suppression, and public land access. Today, the Derby roads remain working Forest Service roads while also serving as popular routes for camping, hunting, overlanding, and exploring the spectacular forests and meadows along the southern edge of the Flat Tops.
