Trail Overview

Climb along Continental Divide with 12,000-foot views at Napoleon Pass. You'll cross several creeks, so expect to get muddy. Take time to explore Tincup Cemetery and the old Gold Cup Mine. This route may close unexpectedly for weather.

Difficulty

Difficult. No obstacles, just a mix of good-size rocks, big tree roots and mud. Trail follows creek, so it is rarely dry. Narrow sections are more difficult when wet and slippery. Don't hesitate to turn around if the slipperiness becomes dangerous. Stay on the trail and don't cut corners. Steep climb just before the pass may intimidate inexperienced drivers.

Managed to make it through going south. Very tight sections for a full size truck. Would only recommend Jeep or smaller!

I did this trail after doing Cumberland pass, starting in Tincup. Rating this as a 6 due to the super steep big rocky section at the beginning of the trail on the Pitkin side, how narrow this trail gets, the steep off camber with a steep drop off part of the trail, and deep ruts due to tree roots. At one point I had to do a 3 point turn to get through the trees, it is a super tight trail. Would not recommend in a truck, this trail is best for SxS.

We started in Tin Cup and made the entire loop. Trail was a little rough near the mines but drivable. Roads were dusty with so many people on them. Great views and plenty of wildlife to see

I did not take pictures this time, too busy being focused šŸ˜‚. On the maps, scenic Cumberland pass is rated 6/10 and it turned out to be nothing. Gave me confidence to try this trail back on the way toward Pitkin from Tincup. Nope. Driving gets very rocky, very quick. Smoked my skid plate pretty easily, but I’ll blame myself for being impatient and picking poor lines. I soldiered on regardless, then came up to a rutted out section combined with a very tall tree root obstacle, probably 24 inches. Had to turn around. Probably about halfway through. A true 5.

We had 9 vehicles in our group from SxS, 4 wheelers and one dirt bike. Going from Tincup (north to south), when we nearly reached the summit, the snow kept us out. A few groups passed going to opposite direction and seemed to do ok. The photo shows the actual trail and the path others are taking.

We did have to cross the snow 2 times but it was about 12ā€ deep. One of the best trails we have rode so far.

Snow drift across the trail at the peak, couldn’t pass through. Should clear up in another week.
