Trail Overview

Fairview is a fun single-track trail in the Gunnison National Forest that side-hills for 3 miles at the edge of the timberline at around 11,500 feet elevation. It dips in and out of the trees and the tundra. It goes through several rock scree fields on a shelfy trail with some exposure. These scree fields are probably the hardest part of the trail. There isn't a singular large obstacle, but it's a rocky surface throughout most of the trail. There are lots of small loose rocks, and lots of small rocks and roots that are embedded into the surface of the trail, which makes it challenging when combined with the narrowness of the trail. It rides underneath Fairview Peak, which is over 13,000 feet high, and the views of the mountain are fantastic. The trail dips farther back down into the tree forest when it meets up with the Gold Creek and Cameron Gulch trails.

Difficulty

This is an intermediate single-track trail with lots of rocks, but the scree fields on a shelfy trail with exposure make this more difficult. This trail gets really narrow in spots.

Trail is a blue going from east to west (downhill). I would say going from west to east (uphill) would be a higher difficulty due to loose rock and technical switchbacks when going up the ridge.

I’m reviewing this trail from a trip I did back in 2021. This was my first time riding the Rockies. I saw someone else mentioned it was rated incorrectly, and I want to confirm and clarify that. If you have a fear of heights, this trail isn’t for you. If you’re not used to riding high exposure with high risk, don’t ride it. I mentally couldn’t handle it and had to ask my riding buddy to take over and ride the bike through one really bad section with exposed roots at the beginning of a hill with lots of exposure, which was right after an exposed horseshoe corner. This trail should be rated much higher just due to the exposure.

Absolutely not a blue trail had some intermediate riders with me and that was well above there skill level and the risk of falling down a mountain isn’t worth it definitely think it’s more of an 8-9 due to the risk. Really disappointed In the fact that this was blue gave me a false expectation that put my friends at high risk. (We couldn’t turn around due to daylight and expecting it to get better)
