Trail Overview
Montgomery Pass is an exceptional trail for intermediate offroaders seeking a scenic climb through the Medicine Bow Mountains that rewards travelers with panoramic alpine vistas. Beginning in the lush valley of State Forest State Park near the North Michigan Creek Reservoir, this route offers drivers excellent opportunities for camping, fishing, and viewing local wildlife. The trail spans approximately 9.4 miles, initially winding through dense pine forests and past active recreation areas on relatively easy, hard-packed dirt roads. As it progresses deeper into the backcountry, travelers will climb from an elevation of 8,757 feet, enjoying views of surrounding peaks like Bull Mountain and eventual glimpses of the high alpine ridgeline near Swallow and Montgomery Pass.
The trail difficulty increases significantly in the latter section, transitioning from a mild dirt road to a steep, narrow, and rough mountain track. While the first 6.5 miles are highly accessible, the final 4 miles require four-wheel drive and low-range gearing to navigate the steep grade and loose rock as you approach the maximum elevation of 11,171 feet. Visitors should prepare for changing high-altitude weather conditions and note that access to this area within State Forest State Park requires a daily or annual Colorado state parks pass.
History
Established in 1938, the 71,000-acre State Forest State Park is part of the 4.5 million acres of state trust land granted to Colorado upon achieving statehood in 1876. Historically used for grazing, logging, and recreation, the area includes Bockman Campground, which was named after the Bockman Lumber Camp where over 100 timber workers lived during the 1950s and 1960s.
Access Description
The trail is located entirely within State Forest State Park, which requires a valid Colorado State Parks daily or annual vehicle pass for entry. Dispersed camping and designated campgrounds, including Bockman Campground, are available in the park, with fishing permitted at the North Michigan Creek Reservoir.
