Trail Overview

Hell Gate Road travels into the mountains from the Fryingpan Road area, roughly four miles from Norrie. The route follows a mostly gravel and packed-dirt surface with scattered loose rock, embedded stone, shallow ruts, and occasional rougher sections. It winds through dense stands of spruce, pine, and aspen, with openings providing views across the surrounding forested mountains and rocky slopes. Large granite outcroppings and scattered boulders line portions of the road. This area also has a long transportation and water-development history. The Colorado Midland Railway once traveled through the Hell Gate area on its route between Norrie, Nast, Hell Gate, and Ivanhoe. Today, the area is also part of the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project's extensive water-diversion system. Nearby, the Nast Tunnel carries diverted water collected from Ivanhoe Creek and other North Side Collection System sources toward the Boustead Tunnel, which ultimately carries water beneath the Continental Divide.

Difficulty

The route presents no significant technical obstacles, with the primary considerations being loose rock, occasional embedded rocks, shallow erosion, and minor uneven sections. Grades are generally manageable, and there are no areas requiring advanced vehicle capability or specialized off-road equipment.

History

The upper Fryingpan Valley has a history tied to early transportation, logging, railroad activity, recreation, and water development. Norrie was once a Colorado Midland Railroad camp and supported a large timber and sawmill operation, with local timber used in railroad construction. The broader area later became an important part of the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project, with an extensive system of diversion structures, conduits, and tunnels carrying water beneath the mountains and across the Continental Divide. Several of these water-development features remain scattered throughout the surrounding mountains today.
