Trail Overview

This route branches off the main Dotsero Crater Loop and climbs to a scenic overlook with expansive views of Interstate 70, the town of Gypsum, and the surrounding mesas and bluffs. Along the way, travelers are treated to a variety of viewpoints showcasing the rugged landscape that defines this part of western Colorado. The trail surface is primarily dusty and sandy but remains easy to navigate, making it suitable for most stock high-clearance vehicles in dry conditions. After reaching the high point of the route, the trail begins a long descent featuring occasional deep silt-filled ruts before winding its way back to the main road. The combination of expansive vistas, unique terrain, and quality campsites makes this a rewarding route for those exploring the area.

Difficulty

In dry conditions, this route is not particularly difficult for most 4WD vehicles. However, there are several deep silt sections that can be challenging for motorcycles and may cause a rider to lose control if approached too quickly. Motorcyclists should use caution and be prepared for occasional loose, soft terrain along the route.
