Trail Overview

Just west of Twin Lakes, off the road to Aspen. A short trail that can be combined with Lost Canyon to make a longer day. The left spur goes to a building remaining from the Gordon Mine. The right spur has great views from remnants of the Bengal Tiger Mine.

I would highly recommend not going on this trail with a motorcycle, extremely loose rock the whole way up, rocks are grapefruit sized and beat the crap out of you. The stamp mill was cool but I will not be doing this trail ever again on a bike.

About a half mile up there is a pretty decent wash that I don’t think I would have cleared in a stock suspension. I would definitely say it it’s closer to 5/10 not 3/10.

I went up this trail jn my stock tacoma. I was in 4-Lo most of the way. The trail definitely requires high clearance and 4x4. I have 9” clearance with stock and i had to get o it and move some rocks to make the clearance other than that my vehicle handled really well. Had to take it slow but i managed. Atvs or polaris’s would probably be better suited for this trail. Where i got confused was that the road was opened the entire way but most of the way up there were private property signs blasted. I stayed in the trail the entire time. I didnt make it up to the mine due to my putting a dent in my truck it kind of bummed me out but the road does go all the way up. I stopped about 3/4 of the way. Still plenty of great views and spotted grey wolf poop. If you do any hiking stay in the trail as there are the no tress passing signs and stay prepped for wildlife encounters to be safe. Other than that it was very beautiful and i dont regret going. Next time i go back i will be going back up in a polaris.

Definitely need a 4x4 . We were happy no one else was on the trail. Not many spots to pass, we are somewhat new to off roading but have been out on the trails. I would rate it higher than a 3. It’s beautiful though.

This trail is actually much more difficult than the app displays. We bottomed out about .5 miles up and definitely needed high clearance 4x4 to press on. Doable for sure, but very rocky and washed out in spots. Be prepared

Deep rut about half mile up. Rocky from that point on. Turned around after the first turn to find alternative camping spots

Pretty easy trail. We got stuck once or twice, but that’s expected when driving a stock SUV with limited off-road experience 😅. This would be a breeze for experienced drivers, or even someone with less experience but higher clearance and better tires. Most of the trail is too narrow for passing or turning around, but there are a few spots that are wider. Very private — about 2-3 dispersed camping spots with great views.

This was a 4x4 Low trail, but it was pretty easy. We’re not newbs, but we’re definitely not experts. We had no problems in a stock rental Wrangler with street tires (except that one was punctured, and we had to change it on the trail. If you make it up to the valley where the mine is, you get the incredible views.

Open to Gordon mine. The right firk to the longer trail is obstructed by a approx 8 inch tree across road .

Original 3/10 rating is likely inadequate. It’s impassable without 4x4 and dedicated Offroad tires and equipment. We went up a couple of turns then had to reverse out. I was unable to pass using my SUV/truck beyond the second major turn, as it would have bottomed out.
