Trail Overview

Trail 381AA is a challenging offshoot that offers a great mix of technical terrain and rewarding views. The trail is not heavily rocky, but it features deep ruts, loose gravel, large washouts, and uneven terrain that will test your rig’s articulation and traction. Expect sections with large tree roots, off-camber obstacles, and terrain that requires careful tire placement. The difficulty comes more from the trail’s erosion and terrain changes rather than large obstacles. Drivers should be prepared for deep holes, steep washouts, and loose surfaces that can make progress slow and require good line choice. The trail ends at several scenic viewpoints with a couple of great camping spots, making the challenge well worth the effort. Plan for about an hour to complete the trail depending on conditions and driving pace. A capable 4x4 with good clearance and proper recovery gear is recommended.

Difficulty

Trail 381AA is a challenging 4x4 route that requires careful driving and good vehicle control. The trail does not have many large rocks or extreme ledges, but deep ruts, loose gravel, large washouts, and uneven terrain create technical sections that will test suspension articulation and tire placement. Drivers should expect off-camber areas, exposed tree roots, and sections where erosion has significantly altered the trail surface. The main challenge is navigating the changing terrain while maintaining traction and choosing the correct line through deep depressions and washouts. A stock 4x4 with good clearance may be able to complete the trail in favorable conditions, but vehicles with upgraded suspension, all-terrain or mud-terrain tires, and recovery gear will be better prepared. Trail conditions can change quickly after weather events, making this route more difficult when wet or heavily rutted.
