Trail Overview
Forest Service Road 147 is a quick, one-mile out-and-back spur off FS 145 that serves a single primary purpose: accessing the Emmaline Lake primitive trailhead. Because of its short length, it is not a standalone off-roading destination, but rather a bumpy access route for hikers and backpackers. The trail winds through areas of dense trees, creating narrow sections that require spatial awareness. You will bounce over embedded rocks and uneven dirt most of the way up. The route dead-ends at a small clearing used for trailhead parking and dispersed camping. Space is limited, so expect a tight turnaround if there are a few vehicles. The trailhead is marked and has a gate across it.
Difficulty
While it lacks major technical obstacles, the road is consistently bumpy and rocky from start to finish. The dense trees create tight pinch points, so wider vehicles need to watch their mirrors and paint. Moderate ground clearance is recommended to clear the embedded rocks without scraping your undercarriage. A standard 4x4 or an SUV with decent clearance can make the drive safely, but low-riding cars will struggle.
