Trail Overview

The Fox Loop (BLM 2758) is a deeply engaging and incredibly scenic mountain trail that provides off-road adventurers with a beautifully immersive, fun forest experience. Branching directly off the well-traveled Grouse Mountain Road, this captivating route gracefully follows the mountainside and immediately plunges explorers into a stunning, dense Aspen forest. The driving surface is primarily composed of loose, fine dirt seamlessly mixed with scattered rocks. Shortly after beginning the trail, visitors will discover a fantastic, highly secluded dispersed campsite perfectly nestled among the towering Aspen trees. This remarkably private, comfortably level camping area easily accommodates 3 to 4 vehicles and features a large, rustic fire ring, making it an ideal spot for an overnight stay in the woods. Furthermore, firewood collection is legally permitted along this trail, with specific, helpful instructions clearly posted right at the trailhead. As drivers push further along the path, the terrain becomes noticeably more challenging. The dirt ruts progressively deepen to a moderate 6 to 8 inches, demanding more careful tire placement. Additionally, sections of the trail tightly narrow, with incredibly dense, overgrown vegetation encroaching on the path, presenting a very real risk of minor vehicle pinstriping. Because fallen trees are exceptionally common in this heavily wooded area, it is highly recommended that adventurers carry a reliable chainsaw or handsaw to safely clear any unexpected obstacles blocking the route.

Difficulty

This beautifully wooded trail, Fox Loop (BLM 2758), presents a generally easy level 3 of technical difficulty suitable for most high-clearance or 4WD vehicles. While the initial stretches feature manageable loose dirt and rocks, the difficulty gradually increases further down the trail as drivers encounter prominent 6 to 8-inch ruts that require deliberate navigation. Additionally, the incredibly tight, vegetation-heavy sections present a significant risk of cosmetic pinstriping to wider vehicles. Finally, the frequent presence of fallen timber across the trail necessitates basic recovery readiness and the foresight to carry a saw to maintain a clear path forward.
