Trail Overview

You'll get to see some of the most beautiful scenery in Colorado once you reach the top. If you're lucky, you'll also see mountain goats hanging out on the steep cliffs. Combine this trail with Saints John to take a nice loop. Closed November 23 to May 20.

Difficulty

Moderate: The road is narrow, steep and rocky in a few places, but doable in a high-clearance 4x4 SUV with low-range gearing. Conditions have gotten slightly more difficult the last few years, and it's possible the rating may someday become difficult.

History

Montezuma was established in 1865 when silver was discovered at nearby Argentine Pass. By 1890, the population grew to nearly 10,000. When the silver boom ended in 1893, the town quickly faded away. Today the town is often described as a ghost town; however, more than 50 people still live here. The Montezuma schoolhouse is one of several original structures. At this writing, unlicensed vehicles are allowed to ride in town. But to maintain this privilege, it is critical that everyone goes slowly and avoids kicking up clouds of dust. Also, do not park in town; use the staging area shown on our map.

CAUTION - Deep snow and dangerous ice currently. Hit Saints John to Deer Creek in a lifted Colorado. Beautiful trails that I would like to hit again in summer, but I would not go for the remaining week these trails are open. Very deep snow in patches above the treeline with nothing to winch off of. Experienced off roader and got stuck in a few places and had to dig out. Then once back in the woods there are some serious ice patches covering the entire road in some steep areas. Wait until next year, but these are beautiful high altitude trails. Under normal conditions, a stock 4x4 with a skid plate can do it. Looks like a dirt road from some of the pictures, but is very rocky over 60-70% of the trail.

Beautiful colors right now. Stock limited 4Runner handled it but pretty rough. Watch out for the jagged rocks on the switchbacks. Punctured the sidewall of a pretty beefy wrangler back in 2017 on the switchback pictured here.

Good conditions in the morning. Light rain in the early afternoon made things a little slippery on the way down on the steeper/rockier parts. Slow going but no major drama. A few motorcycles, SxS, Jeeps, and a helpful Bronco :)

For the record, this trail currently is NOT connectable to Saints John and North Fork without going through snow, which everyone (including the report before me) continues to drive around. This is how trails get closed. It is only a short stretch and will be melted soon but it is so frustrating to watch others ruin these opportunities for future generations.

Little snow at the top but not a issue. Ran this to swan river and was all open

Deer Creek is open all the way until the summit about a half mile before the Saint John's intersection. The snow is too deep and slushy to make an attempt but it should not be long until it's melted away.
