Trail Overview
Starting near the town of Hahns Peak, this trail offers a scenic and varied off-road experience with a little bit of everything along the route. During the first mile, the trail passes through private property and follows a designated right-of-way, so it is important to remain on the established path and respect the property boundaries. Farther along, the trail enters several deeply rutted sections that can hold standing water, including one particularly large and deep mud hole where a vehicle was recently stuck. As the route continues, the smooth packed surface gradually gives way to increasingly rocky terrain, followed by a steep section roughly a quarter-mile or longer in length with loose rocks that require careful throttle control and precise wheel placement. After this challenging section, the trail becomes easier again, although there are scattered small rock ledges, embedded rocks, and ruts that require attention. The terrain eventually smooths out as you climb toward the upper portion of the route, where you will pass intersections with non-motorized hiking and other recreational trails before ultimately reaching the intersection with Royal Flush Road.
Difficulty
This trail is more challenging when traveling from the bottom up than it is in the opposite direction, primarily because of a roughly quarter-mile section of steep, loose rock that will likely require 4WD to climb safely. Outside of this section, the trail remains relatively manageable, with only a few areas featuring embedded rocks alongside ruts and several small rock ledges. These obstacles are not particularly difficult, but they do require careful wheel placement and, in a few spots, it may be helpful to stop and assess the line before proceeding. There are also several mud holes along the route, including one particularly deep hole toward the lower portion of the trail near the town. Use caution in this area, especially after recent precipitation, as the depth and condition of the mud can change significantly.
