Trail Overview

The road to Cloverdale Mine is a fun-filled drive with gorgeous, Rocky Mountain views, a glimpse of the rich mining history of Westcliffe, CO and a couple small spots that will require some technical driving skills. This rocky, 7.7-mile trail ends with a short hike to Cloverdale Mine. The out-and-back trail takes roughly 2-3 hours one way and ascends to above 11,400 feet with dispersed camping throughout. The numerous structures still standing along the trail tell the story of everyday life for the miners at this ghost town. The trail is moderately difficult, with small ledges and sizeable boulders throughout. There are some narrow shelf roads, and it can be muddy if it has rained recently. It is rocky and bumpy throughout, and there is a large boulder field towards the end of trail. Before the mining camp, there is a small ledge obstacle where tire placement becomes particularly important.

History

Erected in 1922 on National Forest Land, the Oakwood Mining Company primarily mined gold at this location from 1951-1960. Silver and lead can also be found at this mine. The gold and silver veins ran out quickly, so mining did not continue for long at this site. Though gold is still viable in the area and can be found in small amounts on the mountain, there are no plans to reopen the facility.

Narrow and rocky. Im on 37s but I think 33s would he fine. It’s just slow walking over rocks. Certainly takes 2 hours 1 way in a Jeep. Didn’t get any pin stripes but its close. Really got watch for branches and down trees.

Very rocky and rough but not technical. We didn't make it all the way to the top only to rainbow lake and decided to head back.

Drove up the afternoon of October 12th and weather was perfect. No major obstacles however the road was rocky and rough but no obstacles or obstructions just rocks. From highway 69 it took me 1 hour and 15 minutes to get up to rainbow lake. Camped there overnight and woke up to some nice snowfall. It was absolutely beautiful. Not enough snow to make the trail scary in anyway on the way down but it is good to note winter is coming! It was cold up there but you really can’t beat that camp site. Took just over an hour to get back down to the highway from rainbow lake. See photos for reference!

its a great and fun trail. not tons of camping sites. thetes camping throughout the trail just not as many as I'd like there to be. There is a rock face you have too climb and lots of rocks!. you should have a lift, 3" and at least 33" tires to be comfortable but I drove it in a stock Jeep but prefer a 16" ground clearance!

just before the boulder field there's a narrow spot we didn't take the JKU through because she's wide and didn't want to get to close to the edge. A more determined mindset and maybe a bump or two could get you through...but it's narrow towards the end
