Trail Overview

This short but scenic route serves as an alternative shortcut to BLM 8430, branching off the route before eventually reconnecting farther up the mountain. While there are no large rocks or significant ledges, this section is noticeably more technical due to several areas where flooding has washed out portions of the shelf road and damaged the corners. Three or four sections require particular attention, and it is strongly recommended that you stop and walk these areas before proceeding to evaluate the safest line. Smaller, narrow-wheelbase vehicles are better suited to the route, while a full-size truck may be able to pass but will have considerably less room to maneuver. 4WD is recommended, along with a spotter to help guide you through the more deteriorated sections. As the route climbs, it winds along the mountainside before reconnecting with BLM 8430, which continues toward a closed gate near the summit. The spectacular views across the surrounding ridges make this challenging little shortcut well worth exploring.

Difficulty

This route requires extra care, particularly in the three sections where runoff has severely damaged the shelf road. In these areas, the road has become deeply cross-rutted, with portions of the shelf deteriorated enough to require careful tire placement and a deliberate approach. A spotter is highly recommended to help guide your vehicle through these damaged sections and identify the safest line. Airing down your tires can provide additional traction and help improve the vehicle’s ability to handle the uneven terrain. 4WD is also recommended, especially where the road surface is loose or unstable. Before attempting this section, take the time to inspect the damaged areas on foot and evaluate current conditions. If the shelf road appears unstable, excessively eroded, or beyond your vehicle’s capabilities, do not attempt the crossing.
