Trail Overview
This scenic BLM trail offers an enjoyable mix of technical driving and rewarding views. Within the first 50 yards, you’ll encounter a deep cross gully that serves as a natural gatekeeper, limiting access to more capable vehicles. Side-by-sides are ideal for this route, although a short-wheelbase, high-clearance 4WD, such as a Jeep, can successfully navigate the trail with an experienced driver. Beyond the initial obstacles, the route climbs steadily through loose, off-camber shelf roads and several steep, rocky ascents where airing down your tires and engaging 4WD are highly recommended. As you gain elevation, expansive views unfold in every direction before the trail reaches a scenic high point overlooking the Colorado River Valley, where a 270-degree panorama and several excellent dispersed campsites provide the perfect setting to relax or spend the night.
Difficulty
This is a very difficult trail for anything larger than a side-by-side. The deep cross gully near the trailhead is the primary obstacle, and if your vehicle can clear it, you should be capable of handling the remainder of the route. Airing down your tires and engaging 4WD are strongly recommended, as nearly 60 percent of the trail consists of steep, loose, rocky climbs that demand good traction and careful driving. Expect deep ruts, often up to 18 inches, typically on only one side of the trail, requiring precise wheel placement throughout the route. This difficulty rating assumes dry conditions; when the trail is wet, the loose climbs and off-camber sections become extremely hazardous, and in most cases the route should not be attempted.
