Trail Overview
This 2.5-mile point-to-point trail serves as a connection between Highway 15 and the Horse Trail - FS 44N08 within the Klamath National Forest. The route is a stark witness to the 2021 Antelope Forest Fire, which devastated over 145,000 acres in this region. The landscape is currently dominated by new-growth sagebrush and a forest of largely dead or partially charred standing timber. While some cleanup and salvage work has occurred, the area remains in a long-term state of recovery. Despite the somber surroundings, the trail offers clear, expansive views of the mountain ranges to the north, and travelers are frequently treated to sightings of deer roaming the recovering habitat.
Difficulty
While the trail is rated a 1 for its lack of technical obstacles, it is listed as a 2 due to environmental conditions. The surface is loose dirt covered with pine needles and is generally 1 to 1.5 vehicles wide. Recent grading has made the path fairly smooth, though you should expect minor bumps throughout the drive. Travelers will need to navigate over or around occasional very small fallen logs that remain on the path. A notable feature is that the trail runs partially along a shelf road with a steep drop-off; please maintain a steady, cautious speed and stay centered on the trail, especially if visibility is reduced by dust.
