Trail Overview

Set within a high-elevation mixed conifer forest recovering from the 2020 August Complex wildfire in the Mendocino National Forest, Sheep Creek - FS 20N09 offers an engaging mountain connection. Accessed directly off of Forest Highway M6, this 5.3-mile single-lane route winds along mountain contours and provides throughput deeper into the forest toward Kneecap Tie. The driving surface consists of a wide single-track gravel and dirt road peppered with cleared log blowdowns, earning an accessible Grade 2 difficulty rating. Departing M6, the route descends smoothly through standing timber snags and green understory brush. Numerous fallen logs have been cut and shifted aside by past trail users, though small branches and pine litter dot the track. At 4.7 miles, the trail navigates a sharp, partially eroded curve where water runoff has undercut the outer edge, requiring cautious wheel placement over log-filled reinforcement. The route finishes after 5.3 miles near the Kneecap Tie junction.

Difficulty

This 5.3-mile single-lane forest connector features a firm dirt and gravel surface marked by minor debris. While mostly smooth, the primary hazard occurs at 4.7 miles on a tight bend where significant water erosion has partially collapsed the roadway, leaving a rutted dip reinforced with laid logs. Drivers should proceed with caution, maintain a slow speed, keep wheels on the firm inner edge of the eroded curve, and watch for scattered fallen limbs along the track.
