Sawmill Mountain Road - FS 1S03 is accessed directly from Evergreen Road near a scenic meadow bordering Yosemite National Park. It functions as a through-route rather than a dead-end spur, serving as one of the primary access roads deep into this section of Stanislaus National Forest. There are no dramatic overlooks along this stretch, just open, mostly forested terrain with peaceful, unbroken views for much of the drive. Standing dead trees are visible on distant hillsides in a few places, consistent with past fire in the district, though the specific fire and year haven't been confirmed on the ground. The surface is a wide, well-graded dirt-and-gravel road, sometimes single-track and sometimes opening into double-track width, kept in noticeably better condition than the tighter connecting spurs nearby. Minor to moderate ruts show up at a handful of points, but the road's width generally allows a vehicle to steer around them without difficulty.
