Phantom Spires - FS 11N26B

Phantom Spires (FS 11N26B) is a 0.8-mile trail featuring an incredibly diverse mix of surface conditions and spectacular, if intimidating, canyon views. The initial turn-off is notably overgrown (enough that branches will inevitably scratch even narrow rigs) and features broken asphalt over the first 25 feet before transitioning into a dirt and gravel mix. For the first 0.4 miles, this single-lane track offers a good deal of steep exposure, dropping off dramatically into a canyon boasting a residual burn scar high above Highway 50 and the American River. As the trail widens and continues, the hard-packed dirt and decomposing granite become rockier and bumpier, with minor ruts forming around the midpoint. You'll pass a small initial campsite before heading down a mixed dirt-and-asphalt hill to cross a creek via a culvert with a prominent stretch of old pavement. A steep climb out leads past a second, mid-sized campsite. Over the final 0.3 miles, the road degrades significantly, becoming heavily weather-eroded with looser dirt, deeper ruts, and a steeper drop-off. The route culminates at a massive clearing—perfect for group dispersed camping—where the road officially dead-ends, contrary to some digital maps that show a non-existent continuation. Because of the lack of early turnarounds, heavy brush, and steep initial exposure, the trail guide opted to hike this route rather than drive it.
