Trail Overview

Branching off Forest Road M1, Jack Hollow (FS 21N11) is a mellow, single-lane out-and-back spur that gradually descends along the western flank of the mountain. Situated within Mendocino National Forest, the surrounding landscape consists of a burn scar steadily recovering from the 2020 August Complex Fire, marked by standing charred timber, regenerating underbrush, and pockets of healthy green conifers. The road features a well-packed fine gravel and dirt surface that offers easy traveling, earning a Technical Rating of 1. At 0.7 miles, a small dispersed camping spot provides a peaceful, shaded retreat with level parking for up to two vehicles. Just past the bend at 0.8 miles, extensive fallen timber and blowdowns span the entire roadbed, completely halting further travel. Recreationists typically visit this quiet spur to secure an easy-access campsite or enjoy a short, relaxed detour off the main thoroughfare.

The downhill grade is mild and requires only basic speed management. Forward progress ends abruptly near the 0.8-mile curve where multiple large tree blowdowns block the pathway entirely. Drivers should plan to turn around in the open clearing at the 0.7-mile campsite rather than proceeding into the blocked corridor.
