Trail Overview

Hungry Creek Lookout - FS 48N32 opens off an unmarked junction in the Klamath National Forest, so the entrance is easy to pass by without keeping an eye on the map. The short spur climbs through open stands of pine and fir on a hard-packed dirt surface, with the steepest pitch coming in the first stretch before the grade eases into a gentle, steady rise. Recently disturbed ground leaves the tread loose and powdery in places, most noticeably late in summer once the surface dries out. Near the top, the road levels off and ends at a small overlook with views across the surrounding ridges. Room to turn around at the overlook is limited, and the route returns the way it came. Best driven from summer through fall.

Difficulty

Rated 2. The route is a short, hard-packed dirt spur with no rocks, ledges, or other obstacles in the tread. What lifts it above a 1 is the steeper opening climb, loose and powdery dirt in sections that can reduce traction when dry, and the tight turnaround at the overlook, which takes some careful maneuvering. It stays at a 2 because the surface is firm underneath, the upper portion is gentle, and nothing along the way calls for technical line choice.
