Trail Overview
Tucked within a tall conifer forest of Jeffrey pines, white firs, and low shrubbery in the Tahoe National Forest, Holcombs Road Spur - FS 0260-050 provides an inviting backcountry detour. Accessed directly off Holcombs Road - FS 0260, this 0.7-mile out-and-back single-track spur travels north into quiet, shaded woodland. Motorized explorers and outdoor campers head down this gentle path to escape main forest roads and set up camp at primitive roadside clearings. The driving surface consists of a flat, well-trodden dirt track layered with soft pine needles, red clay, and occasional small stones, earning an accessible Grade 2 difficulty rating. Departing Holcombs Road, the route follows a level terrain corridor with excellent sightlines through the open tree canopy. At 0.4 miles, a picturesque primitive camp turnout offers comfortable shaded space for up to two vehicles under the tall timber. The track remains smooth and straightforward until just past 0.6 miles, where multiple large fallen logs stretch across the roadway to block further progress, accompanied by a small clearing directly before the timber barrier that allows for an easy turnaround.
Difficulty
Earning an accessible Grade 2 difficulty rating, this 0.7-mile out-and-back spur features a flat dirt base with minimal technical terrain hazards. As shown in the photos, the roadway is largely covered in pine litter and loose soil with only minor embedded pebbles and shallow surface ripples. High-clearance boulders, steep inclines, deep ruts, and mud holes are completely absent. Drivers should maintain a steady speed, stay centered on the established dirt track, and watch for the impassable downed tree trunks blocking the path at the end where a multi-point turnaround is required.
