Trail Overview
Within an open conifer forest filled with tall ponderosa pines and broad-leafed ground flora in the Tahoe National Forest, Wheeler Tie Spur - FS 0450-005-15-05 provides a quiet forest detour. Accessed directly off of Wheeler Tie Road - FS 0450-005, this 0.6-mile single-track dirt spur functions as a peaceful out-and-back spur into the surrounding woodland. Forest visitors and campers utilize this route to reach a secluded primitive campsite or enjoy a tranquil drive near the nearby Kyburz Petroglyph historical site. The driving surface consists of a flat, narrow dirt track with soft silt, pine needles, and scattered small rocks, earning an easy Grade 1 difficulty rating. Departing Wheeler Tie Road, the pathway weaves gently through the trees with clear forward visibility. At 0.4 miles, a small side junction provides a private dispersed camping clearing suitable for one vehicle. The trail continues across level terrain until coming to an abrupt end at 0.6 miles, blocked by a large fallen tree across the roadway where drivers can turn around. The road beyond the fallen tree looks to be abandoned.
Difficulty
Earning an accessible Grade 1 difficulty rating, this 0.6-mile out-and-back spur presents a level dirt surface completely free of technical off-road obstacles. High-clearance rocks, deep ruts, mud holes, and steep inclines are non-existent along the entire route. Non-technical considerations are limited to watching for small scattered stones embedded in the dirt track and turning around safely in the clearing directly before the large downed log at the 0.6-mile mark.
