Trail Overview

Set within an open, sun-dappled conifer forest dominated by tall Jeffrey pines and firs in the Tahoe National Forest, Old Fibreboard - FS 0007-010 serves as a broad and well-traveled mountain connector. Accessed off of Fibreboard Road - FS 7 near the Independence Lake turnoff, this 6.1-mile dirt and gravel road runs south parallel to Highway 89, providing essential throughput between major forest arteries and secondary routes leading to Independence Lake. Outdoor recreationists, campers, and off-road explorers frequently travel this scenic passage to access several established primitive camping clearings or navigate deeper into the surrounding Sierra Nevada backcountry. The driving surface consists of a wide, well-graded dirt and gravel road marked by light washboarding, loose pebbles, and scattered easily avoided rocks, earning an accessible Grade 2 difficulty rating. Departing FS 350, the road maintains a spacious corridor with excellent forward visibility. Open dispersed camping turnouts appear at 1.7 miles (space for 3 vehicles) and 3.0 miles (space for 2 vehicles). A short side spur at 5.4 miles reveals another large campsite clearing for up to 3 vehicles. The route remains mostly level and smooth throughout, finishing its 6.1-mile run at a lower junction connecting directly to Highway 89 and adjacent forest tracks.

Difficulty

Earning an accessible Grade 2 difficulty rating, this 6.1-mile forest connector features a wide, well-graded dirt and gravel surface free of technical off-road challenges. High-clearance boulder fields, deep mud holes, steep inclines, and severe washouts are non-existent under normal dry conditions. As shown in the photos, non-technical considerations are limited to light surface washboarding, loose gravel, and small scattered stones that are easily navigated around. Drivers should maintain a controlled speed, stay to the right along gentle curves to accommodate two-way traffic, and select smooth lines across washboard stretches.
