Trail Overview

This route serves as a significant transit line through the Modoc National Forest, traversing an area heavily impacted by the 2021 Antelope Forest Fire. While the fire's legacy is still clearly visible in the many standing dead trees throughout the landscape, the forest is beginning to recover with new ground foliage sprouting in the gaps. The highlight of this route is its elevation, which provides expansive, "epic" views of the valley floor and distant mountain ranges, offering one of the most rewarding visual experiences in the immediate vicinity.

Difficulty

Carrying a rating of 2, the trail is surfaced with gravel and dirt and is generally one vehicle wide. The primary challenge—and the reason for the caution—is the shelf road section featuring a very steep drop-off. Drivers must remain attentive to their tire placement and avoid drifting toward the edge. While the surface itself is not technically demanding in terms of ruts or rocks, the exposure level makes this a route that requires a cool head and controlled speed, particularly when navigating turns or passing oncoming traffic.
