Trail Overview

FS 3N37Y branches off Merrill Springs Road within the Stanislaus National Forest, weaving through a mixed conifer woodland filled with mature pines, cedars, and dry grassy meadows. This natural-surface dirt route serves primarily as an out-and-back spur for full-width vehicles, ending where it transitions directly into FS 17EV80, a designated motorized trail restricted to vehicles 50 inches wide or less. The single-lane roadbed consists of hard-packed dirt peppered with scattered loose stones, shallow surface undulations, and light brush along the margins. A roomy clearing partway through provides a well-defined dispersed campsite with space to turn around. Past the campsite, the corridor tightens slightly through sectioned fallen logs and roadside shrubs before reaching the vehicle turnaround point at the motorized trail boundary. Recreationists use this route primarily for quiet backcountry camping and as a staging approach for narrower trail exploration.

Difficulty

Rated a comfortable 2 due to its gentle slopes, firm ground, and absence of technical rock ledges or deep ruts. The primary considerations include loose gravel, occasional shallow dips, and light brush along the edges that can cause minor paint scuffs. Cut logs frame the trail well, though clearance between downed tree trunks can feel snug in a few spots. Maintaining a controlled speed and watching vehicle placement through narrow tree cuts ensures an easy, drama-free drive from start to finish.
