Trail Overview
This very well-maintained road branches off FS 30N32 and offers a beautiful forest drive through the Swain Mountain Experimental Forest. The route winds through a mix of open woodland and denser forest, with large boulders scattered among the trees. Although the road is generally in good condition, trimmed logs and fallen trees still encroach slightly on the route, so keep an eye out. A chainsaw may help when exploring this area, but don’t attempt to clear obstacles unless permitted. At the end of the trail, you’ll find a gorgeous, large clearing that's an excellent spot for dispersed camping; the open space contrasts nicely with the surrounding forest, making it a particularly rewarding destination. As the route passes through the Swain Mountain Experimental Forest, respect any posted restrictions and follow the area’s access guidelines. The road is seasonally designated and open from April 1 through December 25, so plan your visit accordingly. ATVs, UTVs, Side-by-Sides, and Dirt Bikes must always have a valid California ATV Operating Permit sticker.
