Trail Overview
This is a scenic dirt track that winds through a shifting landscape of dense green pine forests and open, fire-scarred hillsides. You will know you are at the correct trailhead when you spot the brown FS 1S78 marker at the base of a rather steep, loose sandy dirt climb. As you push forward, the environment offers a gorgeous natural contrast; you will drive through sections beautifully lined with vibrant purple wildflowers blooming right next to the bleached snags of older burnt trees. Toward the end of the run, the terrain softens into a wonderfully peaceful, sun-drenched grassy meadow filled with tall pines and bright dandelions. However, this isn't just a leisurely scenic cruise. Drivers will have to carefully navigate some noticeable obstacles, most prominently the deep, continuous rain ruts and center washouts that run parallel down the sandy track. You will also need to steer around scattered deadwood and squeeze past at least one large downed log sitting tightly against the right side of the trail boundary.
Difficulty
While the grassy meadow sections are flat and easy, the deep, V-shaped rain ruts carved into the hillside present a legitimate off-road challenge. These deep washouts require very deliberate tire placement, proper articulation, and decent ground clearance to avoid hazardous off-camber lean or undercarriage damage. Combined with the steep, loose dirt climb at the trail's entrance and the encroaching downed logs, this trail requires a capable 4x4 vehicle and an attentive driver to navigate smoothly and safely.
