Trail Overview
If you are new to the area and looking for a great jumping-off point, FS 1S04 is an excellent place to start. The trail begins right at a designated OHV staging area, marked by clear forestry signage, and serves as a primary access road connecting to several other exciting trails in the region. The route kicks off as a relatively flat, wide single-track path featuring a comfortable mix of gravel and packed dirt. As you cruise along, you will be treated to really nice, sweeping views of the surrounding mountainous landscape. While the drive is highly accessible, there are a few things to watch out for. You will encounter mild branches and uncleared natural debris scattered across the road, as well as a few large, downed logs that stretch partially into the track. Further along, the terrain gets a bit more textured with small to moderate dirt washouts and ruts carved into the hillside. Fortunately, the road is wide enough that you can easily steer clear of the deepest ruts and bypass the logs, making for a scenic and enjoyable connector route. You'll also pass an open gate along the way, indicating the transitions between active recreation zones.
Difficulty
This trail is very manageable for most off-road vehicles and high-clearance AWDs, earning a solid Difficulty 2 rating. The initial flat, gravel and packed-dirt sections are quite smooth and comfortable. The primary technical challenges come from navigating the small to moderate dirt ruts and keeping an eye out for those downed trees protruding onto the path. However, because this access road is generously wide, drivers have plenty of room to pick a safe line and bypass the deepest washouts and debris. It is a stress-free, scenic gateway to deeper off-roading adventures.
