Trail Overview
If you are exploring the region and looking for a quiet, scenic ascent, the FS 1S76 trail offers a lovely, sustained climb up the northern slopes of Sawmill Mountain. The route itself is a clearly defined, single-lane dirt track. As you make your way up the mountain, you will transition through lush corridors of green pines into more exposed stretches dotted with the remnants of past fires, featuring striking, sun-bleached dead trees reaching into the sky. The dirt surface is generally smooth and manageable, though you should expect to continuously roll over a fair amount of minor trail debris, such as scattered sticks and small fallen branches. As you gain elevation, your reward for the climb opens up through the trees: breathtaking, panoramic views to the north, looking out toward the Tuolumne River and a rolling sea of distant mountains. The journey culminates in an isolated dirt clearing that serves as a beautifully peaceful campsite overlooking the valley below.

The trail is quite friendly for newcomers, featuring a predictable, packed dirt surface without any deep washouts, intimidating mud pits, or technical rock-crawling obstacles to worry about. The primary considerations here are the narrow width of the single-lane track and the overgrown vegetation lining the edges, which will almost certainly cause some light, unavoidable brush pinstriping on full-size 4x4 rigs. Additionally, drivers will need to be mindful of the frequent, small fallen branches scattered across the pathway. Overall, any standard 4x4 or high-clearance AWD vehicle will comfortably and confidently reach the beautiful campsite at the top.
