Trail Overview
Tucked away within the Stanislaus National Forest, FS 1S51 is a quiet out-and-back spur accessed directly from the main surrounding forest road network. The drive winds through an open woodland landscape steadily recovering from the 2013 Rim Fire, featuring lush manzanita undergrowth and sunlit stands of young pine before transitioning into a canopy of taller conifer timber. Commonly explored for secluded dispersed camping opportunities, scenic views, and peaceful forest touring, the route offers a relaxed backcountry detour. The roadway consists of a well-established, single-lane track of packed gravel and dirt lightly dusted with forest litter. Although prior maintenance has cleared several timber cuts along the shoulders, the trail comes to an abrupt dead end where large fallen trees currently block the corridor.
Difficulty
This trail is smooth, level, and straightforward. The roadbed features a consistent surface of firm dirt and fine gravel free from washed-out ruts, steep pitches, ledges, or loose rock. Traction remains solid along the entire traveled portion. The primary factor to note is the abrupt terminus created by a large downed tree blocking the road, which requires a careful multi-point turnaround within the tree line to head back.
