Trail Overview
Accessed directly from Highway 49 via Chapman Calpine, the beautiful Chapman Saddle Road takes you on a sweeping journey through a towering evergreen forest. As you cruise along this wide, inviting path, you will notice that the landscape periodically opens up to reveal areas of recent forest thinning, with scattered tree stumps and cleared brush resting along the shoulders. It is incredibly important to stay alert on this route, as there are active logging operations occurring along the trail as of July 2026. Keep an eye out for bright orange diamond signs warning of heavy log truck traffic, and always maintain a cautious speed so you are ready to yield to heavy equipment. The driving surface itself is primarily composed of firm, hard-packed dirt that is generously interspersed with patches of light, loose gravel. While it lacks any highly technical rock crawling sections or steep, dramatic drop-offs, the serene woodland atmosphere makes for a truly delightful and straightforward forest drive.
Difficulty
While the road is generally quite smooth and highly accessible, it is slightly more textured than adjacent paved stretches, featuring a scattered collection of small potholes, shallow dirt divots, and occasional patches of light washboarding. There are absolutely no massive, deep ruts or sharp, high-clearance boulders to worry about. By simply maintaining a slow, steady momentum and carefully steering around the more noticeable divots, your suspension will easily absorb the minor bumps, making for a stress-free and highly enjoyable ride.
