Trail Overview

The 5.5-mile out and back dirt road will take you from HWY 88/89 intersection to Burnside Lake. The dirt road is relatively smooth and wide enough for two vehicles to pass. This is a well-traveled and popular road in the summer. During dry weather 2WD SUVs can easily get to the lake. There are many side roads and trails that can be taken from Burnside Lake Road, all of which are rated more difficult, and require 4x4 with high clearance. In the spring, there are several creeks that cross under the road in drain pipes, including Hawkins Creek. During the winter, the road maybe covered in snow, sometimes deep snow, and is impassable for most stock 4x4s. Cell phone service is not reliable along parts of this road. No visitor fees are required to drive south to the Lake. At the beginning of the road, you will see a sign that requires a visitor fee to be paid. The visitor fee is for the Hope Valley Wildlife Area just north and across from HWY 88.

Just about any stock vehicle can do this road, even Subarus, if you go slow enough to avoid the occasional rock cropping, dont ge me wrong, wouldn't take a lowered vehicle but The trail is just as described. Lots of good fall colors right now. Lake is nice with a hiking trail in the area.

Trail surface alternates between packed dirt and sections of exposed rock. Overall, this is an easy trail wide enough for two vehicles, making it beginner-friendly and a great place to build confidence and develop basic off-road skills. The payoff is Burnside Lake at the end. I ran the trail midweek and was lucky enough to grab one of about 4–5 camping spots along the lake. Couldn’t have asked for a better maiden voyage — capped off by watching a bald eagle swoop down and pull a fish right off the water’s surface.

Popular trail, saw 3-4 other rigs during our round trip. No technical challenges, but a few rocky areas where high clearance makes your life easier. Very beginner friendly, and full of views that are worth it, even for advanced drivers!

Supper easy fire road. Loads of fun, for easy rippin down the road. Be mindful of the cur down trees. There are numerous stumps and I, unfortunately, hit one with minor damage to my vehicle. Could have been easily avoided, if I was paying better attention.

super easy trail to the lake - should be fine for anything like a Subaru Outback or more capable vehicles... some rocks that are easily avoided, dusty trail, but it's a scenic drive through the trees, ending up at Burnside Lake. There are plenty of offshoot trails if you want to explore more
