Trail Overview
Set within an open conifer and hardwood forest recovering from the 2013 Rim Fire in the Stanislaus National Forest, Aspen Valley - FS 1S74 provides a pleasant, sun-dappled mountain drive. Accessed off Evergreen Road near the western approach to Yosemite, this 1.1-mile route follows a deteriorating asphalt road that has weathered into a wide dirt track. Recreators and road trippers explore this scenic spur to establish a peaceful primitive campsite that serves as a convenient launchpad for day trips into Hetch Hetchy or Yosemite National Park. The driving surface consists of a flat, smooth foundation of hard-packed dirt, residual pavement, and minor loose gravel, earning an easy Grade 1 difficulty rating. Departing the main access corridor, the pathway climbs at a slow, gradual incline, opening up panoramic mountain vistas along the driver's side. Though wide enough in select spots for two vehicles to pass cautiously, the road functions strictly as an out-and-back route due to a locked metal gate at the 1.1-mile mark marking the Yosemite Wilderness boundary.
Difficulty
Earning an accessible Grade 1 difficulty rating, this 1.1-mile spur features a broad surface composed of firm dirt and weathered pavement patches. Ground clearance obstacles, deep ruts, mud holes, and rock ledges are completely absent under normal dry conditions. Drivers can navigate the slow climb with ease, enjoy the scenic vistas along the way, and utilize the wide turnaround space positioned directly before the locked park boundary gate.
