Trail Overview

Beginning off County Road 3841, this route enters the Pine Wildlife Management Area and quickly transitions from a maintained access road into a narrow forest route. You will pass a single private residence near the entrance, so please respect the property owner's boundaries and remain on the designated route. As the route continues, vegetation closes in with overhanging branches and brush that will almost certainly leave pinstripes on your vehicle. A shallow creek crossing is encountered early in the route and is typically easy to cross under normal conditions. The primary obstacle is a steep hill climb featuring a deep washout along the passenger side. Careful tire placement is required to avoid the washout while maintaining traction over the uneven terrain. Vehicles with low range, adequate ground clearance, and good articulation will have the easiest time navigating this section. During warmer months, insects can be abundant, so insect repellent is recommended if you plan to exit your vehicle.

Difficulty

The combination of an off-camber hill climb, deep erosion, and limited room for error requires careful vehicle control. While the route is relatively short, recovering from a mistake could be difficult due to the narrow corridor and lack of bypasses. Vehicles equipped with low range and adequate suspension travel, and disconnecting front sway bars or an aftermarket one like Rock Jock, will have a significant advantage.

History

The Ozark National Forest was established in 1908 and today forms part of the Ozark-St. Francis National Forests, protecting more than one million acres across northern Arkansas. Many of the Forest Service roads traveled today began as logging, fire access, or resource management roads before becoming part of the modern recreation network. Forest management continues to play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems through timber management, prescribed fire, wildlife habitat restoration, and watershed protection. The rugged Boston Mountains and surrounding Ozark Highlands remain one of the oldest and most geologically significant mountain regions in North America, offering visitors a unique combination of natural beauty and rich forest history.
