Trail Overview

This out-and-back route begins on a maintained gravel road that gradually transitions into a narrower, rockier two-track as it climbs through a dense forest of hardwoods and tall pines. The trail winds beneath a thick canopy, with occasional tighter sections where overhanging branches and brush may cause light pinstriping, particularly for full-size vehicles. The surface becomes noticeably rougher toward the end, with loose rock, embedded stones, and minor erosion requiring slower speeds and careful tire placement, though there are no major ledges or difficult obstacles. Fallen trees are always a possibility after storms, so carrying a saw is recommended. The route eventually opens into a quiet grassy clearing surrounded by scattered pines, offering a peaceful turnaround area with plenty of room to maneuver larger vehicles. The open area also makes a suitable primitive campsite for those looking to spend the night, providing a secluded setting away from the main road. Wildlife is common throughout the area, and the combination of wooded corridors, rocky terrain, and the scenic forest opening makes this a pleasant drive for those seeking a short excursion with a slightly more rugged feel than the surrounding maintained roads.

Difficulty

The primary challenges consist of a rocky surface, minor erosion, and occasional tight areas where brush and overhanging branches may cause light pinstriping. There are no significant hill climbs, ledges, deep ruts, or water crossings, although downed trees may temporarily block the trail after storms.

History

The Ozark National Forest was established in 1908 and today forms part of the Ozark-St. Francis National Forests, protecting more than one million acres across northern Arkansas. Many of the Forest Service roads traveled today began as logging, fire access, or resource management roads before becoming part of the modern recreation network. Forest management continues to play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems through timber management, prescribed fire, wildlife habitat restoration, and watershed protection. The rugged Boston Mountains and surrounding Ozark Highlands remain one of the oldest and most geologically significant mountain regions in North America, offering visitors a unique combination of natural beauty and rich forest history.
