Trail Overview

This route winds through a mature hardwood and pine forest on a mostly one-vehicle-wide gravel road with frequent curves that create a secluded, peaceful drive. While the road is generally well maintained, drivers should be prepared for several sharp blind corners that limit visibility, making reduced speeds and extra caution important in case of oncoming traffic. Fortunately, there are numerous wider sections where vehicles can safely pull over to pass one another. Towering pines, dense hardwoods, and lush undergrowth line both sides of the road, creating a shaded canopy for much of the drive. Wildlife such as deer, wild turkey, turtles, and other forest animals are common in the area, and downed trees may occasionally be encountered following storms. The route gradually travels through the rolling forest before ending at a large grassy turnaround that easily accommodates full-size trucks, trailers, and other long-wheelbase vehicles, making it a convenient turnaround point without the need for difficult backing maneuvers.

Difficulty

The primary challenges are the numerous blind corners, occasional water erosion along the road edges, and the possibility of encountering wildlife, downed trees, or another vehicle around a blind curve. While there are several places to pull off and allow traffic to pass, drivers should reduce speed through the tighter turns due to the limited visibility.

History

The Ozark National Forest was established in 1908 and today forms part of the Ozark-St. Francis National Forests, protecting more than one million acres across northern Arkansas. Many of the Forest Service roads traveled today began as logging, fire access, or resource management roads before becoming part of the modern recreation network. Forest management continues to play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems through timber management, prescribed fire, wildlife habitat restoration, and watershed protection. The rugged Boston Mountains and surrounding Ozark Highlands remain one of the oldest and most geologically significant mountain regions in North America, offering visitors a unique combination of natural beauty and rich forest history.
