Trail Overview

After you enter the gate, you go through a little sand, take a left, and head to the Sawtooth Mountains. Continue on the trail past the Ironwood Forest National Monument. There's wonderful scenery as you travel an easy trail. After you seem to be clearing the mountains, you will go right and up a steep incline (Widow Makers Pass). Stop at the top and look at the view. After going down the pass, you have many off-shoot trails you can explore, all with different degrees of difficulty. This is a stunning area and not very traveled, so take your time and enjoy.

This is a hidden gem this close to the city. Trail conditions were pretty mellow for this run. There are some signs from the heavy rains but nothing too crazy. There were a few jeeps on the trail, which was nice because we were out on our own. I just got done rebuilding my 4Runner on 35” tires with mid travel in the front and long travel in the rear. Aired down to 15psi with no lockers we managed to walk right up the pass no problem. For lesser equipped vehicles lockers are probably a must, the pass is very steep and very loose especially towards the top. I was happy to see there was not very much of any trash on the trails. Always remember to leave gates how you find them, pick up your trash and tread lightly!

Beautiful weather and scenery, trails in good condition. With careful driving, only a few light pin stripes on this full size Bronco. Most of the trail(s) can be ran in 2WD, but several including “Widow Maker” will require 4WD. I ran the trail this time hitting the steep going up. I had a front locker, so I used it. Its possible to climb Widow Maker without a front locker, but you better know what your doing. IMO, its easier to try WM going down, vs. up, as Ive now ran it both directions. Word to the wise, 2 vehicles is preferred, as both times Ive ran it, Ive been the only one out there all day. If its only you, it could be a long time until help arrives. Cell coverage was 50/50 due to how hilly the terrain is. Be courteous and shut gates behind you, and watch for livestock as they occasionally show up on the road.

Fun trail. Im glad I checked it out. Went solo, never saw a soul. Definitely better with another vehicle in case you have issues. I did Widow Maker in reverse, so the steep section was a downhill for me. Agree with original post on difficulty. There will be a few sections of pin striping for all but the narrowest vehicle. Touched the skids a few times. Nothing too rough though. Stock Ranger, did not air down. Most can run this with just the rear locker.

The southeastern side of Widow-maker pass is quite steep, 4wd required. Be careful!

Absolutely beautiful quintessential desert landscape Most difficult part is the eastern side of the pass…. Very steep. Need to be careful to stay even otherwise rolling would be a huge risk, with questionable survivability Topheavy ATVs could be alot of extra risk too, especially descending Ran over some random barbed wire, hidden in a pile of sticks, by flying crown ranch. Had to go buy a bolt cutter to free myself up
