Trail Overview
The north end of Tailhoit Mesa Trail #666 starts as a continuation of the road segment of #666, without any signs or a clear entrance. The terrain is a flat desert ground covered in a heavy layer of cobble, loose flat rocks that are all packed down into the dirt, which makes for a jarring ride. It is difficult at times to see the actual route because it blends into the sides of the trail, making an offline map here essential to follow the route. It winds through the juniper trees over pretty flat ground, with some smoother sections giving relief from the rocks. It passes the spur to the Smith Mesa Corral, which is also an easier ATV trail. The trail changes terrain as you go south, to more of a decomposed granite surface, and passes scenic hillsides covered in giant granite boulders. Expect some big ruts and mildly steep sections.
Difficulty
This trail is easier compared to the many rocky, challenging trails in the area. It still has a layer of cobble and loose rock, but it also has rock-free dirt sections that make it a smoother ride. It doesn’t have any major rock ledges or obstacles, and remains mostly gradual.
