Trail Overview
Lava River Cave Road is an easy gravel route ideal for beginners, families, and offroaders looking for straightforward access to one of northern Arizona's the Lava River Cave. Extending roughly 3.1 miles through the ponderosa pines of the Coconino National Forest, this highly accessible trail serves as a direct link between US Highway 180 near Aspen Tank and the Kendrick Mountain area forest roads. With a mild elevation change starting around 7,738 feet and rising to 7,964 feet the route features a flat, well-graded gravel surface making it suitable for any standard passenger vehicle or high-clearance SUV during dry conditions.
Along the drive, visitors will pass scenic spots like Bradley Tank and enjoy dispersed camping opportunities nestled within the dense forest. Since the road sits at a high elevation, it is not maintained in the winter and is subject to seasonal closures with a locked gate when snow and mud make travel impassable. The prime time to visit is from late spring through autumn, which aligns perfectly with hiking the nearby lava tube—a mile-long subterranean cave formed by volcanic activity. Access Description
The route is managed by the Coconino National Forest. There are no fees or permits required to drive the road or access the Lava River Cave. However, the road is not maintained in the winter and is subject to seasonal closure via a locked gate when snow and muddy conditions make travel impassable. Visitors planning to enter the cave should bring multiple light sources and wear warm layers, as the cave temperature remains around 40 degrees Fahrenheit year-round.
