Trail Overview
Road 9004M offers a peaceful drive through dense ponderosa pine forests and expansive high-country pastures, making it an excellent route for beginners or those looking for a relaxed backcountry adventure. Spanning approximately 5.0 miles, this lightly traveled doubletrack winds through the scenic terrain near Wild Bill Hill, sitting at elevations between 7,437 and 7,623 feet. Drivers can expect mostly flat terrain with a minimal cumulative elevation gain of around 137 feet, though the narrow trail is typically only one vehicle width wide. The route is ideal for high-clearance vehicles and stock 4x4s, offering a chance to escape the more crowded main roads and explore tranquil landmarks like Holding Pasture Tank and Seven Anchor Tank.
The trail's surface is primarily unpaved dirt, earning a technical rating of 2 due to occasional rocky sections and deep mud when wet. This road is not winter maintained and can become incredibly slick and impassable during the spring melt or summer monsoon season. Dispersed camping spots are scattered among the mature trees along the way, though cell service is highly spotty throughout the area. To access the trail, drivers can connect from the east via the Camp Two-Wild Bill-Kendrick road near Wild Bill Tank, or from the west near the Seven Anchor Tank junction.
Access Description
This road is not winter maintained and can become extremely muddy, slick, and difficult to navigate when wet. It is a narrow, single-car-width route with spotty cell phone service, requiring drivers to be self-reliant.
