Trail Overview
FS 9606F begins off Salt Mine Road at a gated access point. Please ensure it remains closed after passing through.
This is a short point-to-point connector trail primarily used as a shortcut route to FS 9602N. The trail starts as a dirt and gravel road climbing steeply uphill through open desert terrain surrounded by low shrubs and rugged mountain scenery.
The initial climb is wide with a noticeable rock berm along portions of the trail. Loose rock and steep grades can make traction difficult, especially in wet conditions where the route may quickly become impassable.
At the top of the main hill climb, drivers may naturally want to follow the freshly dozed road heading left beneath the power lines. That route is not FS 9606F. Instead, continue straight ahead where the original trail leaves the cleared road and re-enters the more natural terrain.
From this point, the trail narrows significantly and becomes increasingly overgrown. The final tenth of a mile transitions into a tight shelf-road style section with brush encroaching into the trail. Pinstriping is likely for wider vehicles.
Use caution throughout the upper section, especially during or after rain, as erosion and slick surfaces can make the trail dangerous or impassable.
Overall, FS 9606F is a short but useful connector route offering steep hill climbs, narrow shelf-road sections, desert scenery, and direct access toward FS 9602N for more advanced backcountry exploration.
Difficulty
Shelf road at the top, ruts, and very natural pinstripes, likely muddy conditions in wet weather. Nothing technical and no obstacles found
