Trail Overview

FS 9601M is a remote backcountry route accessed deep within the forest by first traveling FS 9601J to FS 9601L. At the top of the hill, the trail turns left and begins winding around the mountains before eventually climbing down a steep off-camber shelf rock into a wide prairie landscape. The trail starts with narrow sections featuring overgrown brush and tight trees, making pinstriping possible for wider vehicles. Surface conditions begin with smaller loose gravel but gradually transition into larger loose rock sections ranging from 12 to 18 inches in size. Several portions of the trail contour around the mountainside with shelf-road sections and occasional off-camber moments. Careful tire placement is recommended, especially while crossing loose rock on angled terrain. As the route rounds the hillside, the trail descends into a large natural grass prairie surrounded by rolling hills and expansive views in every direction. During spring and early summer, the prairie becomes lush and green, while in the hotter summer months, the grass turns dry and produces heavy stickers and burrs. After crossing the prairie, the trail reaches a Y intersection where the route continues right through a gate before descending into a creek crossing and climbing out the opposite side. Livestock are commonly found throughout the area, so use caution around blind corners and open grazing sections. While no major obstacles or highly technical features were encountered, 4WD low is strongly recommended to reach and travel this route due to the steep climbs and consistently loose rock surfaces. Maintaining steady traction is important on several hill climb sections. This is a scenic and moderately challenging backcountry trail offering Mountain shelf-road driving Prairie landscapes, Creek crossings, Expansive views of the surrounding hills and valleys This trail is best enjoyed in cooler months or spring when the prairie is green, and temperatures are more manageable.
