Trail Overview
Trail 247 is a smooth, graded connector that links to a section of the Great Western Trail. With no obstacles or technical terrain, it’s an easy drive for any vehicle. The route winds through the pine forests of the Kaibab Plateau, passing the historic Orderville Canyon Sawmill and continuing toward the sinkhole area. Located just off U.S. Route 89A, it offers several dispersed camping spots and frequent wildlife sightings.
History
The Orderville Canyon Sawmill dates back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, when logging was a key industry on the Kaibab Plateau. The mill was used to harvest and process ponderosa pine for nearby settlements, including the town of Orderville. Timber from this area supported early construction, fencing, and fuel needs in the region. Today, the site serves as a historic reminder of the plateau’s logging era, with signage that highlights how important these operations were to local development before the area became protected forest land.
