Trail Overview
This off-road route begins just off the main road to Punta Cancun, cutting across a salt flat before transitioning into a narrow, sandy desert track that's been shaped by various race courses over time--expect a lively ride through the whoops in the first half-mile. After a left turn onto a broader salt flat, the trail smooths out to a nearly pavement-like surface, offering a fast, scenic loop around its perimeter. Be aware that this area can change drastically with tides or recent rain. Exiting the salt flat, the route unfortunately passes through zones used as informal dumping grounds by local fishermen--a sobering reminder of the need for better stewardship. Soon after, you'll skirt a high barbed-wire wall before winding around it and spotting seasonal fishing shelters near the coast. As you push farther, the track becomes more remote, shifting between soft two-track sand and trails slowly being reclaimed by succulents. The beach section is truly breathtaking, revealing expansive ocean views that underscore the remoteness of the ride. Around the four-mile mark, it may appear the trail ends, but a hidden path continues through a patch of green, where fiddler crabs scatter across white sand as you drive by. Finally, the trail turns left and rejoins the coast, delivering you to the most stunning beach of the entire journey--your rewarding endpoint.
Difficulty
While this route isn't particularly difficult under dry conditions, it has the potential to change dramatically with weather or tides. Several stretches skirt salt flats and pass through low-lying areas where succulents are reclaiming the trail, and standing water may appear along the way. Full-size vehicles should always stop to assess any wet or muddy sections, especially near the coast, and stay aware of tidal changes to avoid getting stranded. With 4WD, the ability to air down your tires, and solid recovery skills, most drivers should be able to complete the route without major issues.
