Trail Overview
This scenic two-track trail begins just off the main road to Punta Cancun, winding its way through a narrow, single-vehicle path layered with a few inches of soft sand that alternates between dry and slightly damp. About half a mile in, the trail opens dramatically into a striking salt flat--more reminiscent of a dry lake bed than traditional desert terrain. While the route isn't technically challenging, maintaining momentum is essential for 2WD vehicles, particularly through the soft sand climbs that define much of the middle stretch. The trail continues to rise gently over sand hills before descending toward a unique coastal wetland, where low succulents cover the ground and mangroves dot the horizon. A final right-hand turn leads directly onto a quiet beachfront next to a small fishing camp, where visitors are welcome to camp for free. Local fishermen often sell fresh oysters, clams, and fish, and the beach itself is remarkably well-kept--a rare and appreciated effort in this region.
Difficulty
While this trail isn't particularly challenging, having four-wheel drive is a plus--especially for the sandy sections with moderate climbs. Be aware that parts of the route pass through low-lying areas that can be slightly wet even during the dry season. These spots could become more difficult to navigate after heavy rains or during high tides, so plan accordingly.
